Deaf Man For A Day

It’s common knowledge among my friends that I meet and date a lot of beautiful women. Whenever my buddies and I get together, they always ask me about my latest romantic escapades. Last weekend was no exception and this time around, I decided to regale them with tales of my deaf dating experience that my sister set up. It was a blind date with a cute deaf girl who left an impression on me because of her many accomplishments and the way she lived a full life despite of her handicap. They all agreed that it was an interesting date. One of my friends joked that I probably wouldn’t last a day if I woke up and discovered I was a deaf man. Not one to back off from a challenge even though it was meant as a joke, I’ll prove to them that I can. They just shrugged their shoulders and said I had had too many beers.

The next day saw me rummaging through my stuff looking for a pair of over-sized headphones that would be perfect for what I had in mind. I was serious about the “deaf man for a day” thing and these big headphones would cut off most of the sounds around. The moment I put on the headphones, there was nothing but silence. I could no longer hear the ambient sounds in my apartment that I’d gotten used to. It wasn’t really a big deal since I could still do my Sunday morning routine without any problems. Sure, I couldn’t listen to music, but I could still watch DVDs. All I had to do was turn the subtitles on. It may not be as good as hearing the actors speak, but it’s much better than not knowing what they are saying.

As the day wore on, I found that aside from some limitations on certain activities, having impaired hearing isn’t really that bad and it will only take some adjustments for a deaf man to lead a fairly normal life. I even went so far as to do my grocery shopping with the hideous things on my head. I can see people looking at me probably thinking about how silly I looked. I didn’t really care as long as I got to prove my drinking buddies wrong.

While walking home, I felt good about myself and how I’d managed to get by with this little experiment. I just ignored the strange look on people’s faces when I was crossing the street thinking it must be my headphones. I almost fainted when I turned around and saw a car heading my way. Luckily, I was able to escape with only a few bruises and spilled groceries. Plus, there was a beautiful angel who rushed to my side and helped me to my feet. We’re going out to dinner this weekend as my way of thanking her.
