Is The Word BBW Sexy?

I’ve always hated buzz words. Whenever I hear a new buzzword, I can’t help but feel that it shortens words or phrases that don’t need shortening, thereby dumbing down the English language. Maybe we just live in the world of short attention spans, and our language reflects that. BBW is one of those buzz-words/acronyms that give me a headache. Big Beautiful Women is a nice phrase; it gets the message across without being overbearing. BBW makes me think of some Eastern European budget car producers. It’s not like Cupids’ Reviews is above criticism either – we have an entire section devoted to BBW dating. But is the phrase BBW sexy? Is it acceptable shorthand, or does it actually insult the people that it refers to?

It’s kind of the same phenomenon as politically correct phrases. Political correctness pretty much died at the end of the nineties (unless Bill O’Reilly is to be believed). Not that I support old racist, sexist, homophobic terms – far from it. Some PC terms actually seem more insulting than the old phrases however (Little Person instead of Dwarf, for instance). BBW is a weirdly technical word for a group of truly beautiful women, and I sincerely believe that a better term should be forthcoming.

Think about conversations that you’ve had in the past with loved ones. When you’re sharing your thoughts on love and life, do you really want to use an acronym that’s as dismissive as BBW? Sometimes taking the time to actually spell out what you mean can make an immense difference rather than going for spoken short-hand.

Saying the right thing all of the time may not give you the lips of an angel. Some of us aren’t as eloquent as others (just because I write rambling articles doesn’t mean I’m particularly articulate either, for that matter). However, using a phrase that isn’t just some quickie buzzword floating around the blogosphere might endear you to more people than you think.
